Fair Plaza Garage

The City of Tyler determined a parking garage was a key component to the continued vitality of downtown. The Fair Foundation has been a long time supporter of Tyler and downtown for many years. Their contribution of this property fit perfectly with the city’s plans for additional parking. Its location on Broadway is great for easily identifying downtown parking. The location also created a challenge to the goals of visual improvements to the streetscapes in downtown. The city tasked Butler Architectural Group with developing a design that disguised the structural components of the garage.

Butler Architectural Group completed a lengthy facade study to determine the architectural appearance appropriate to the location. Butler’s goal with all their projects is for it to be grounded where it is located. Our studies circled around until an idea to represent buildings from the past that were in downtown. Citizens of Tyler who remember downtown will notice sections of the façade that resemble the Blackstone Hotel and Tyler Commercial College. This historical representation makes this garage specifically unique to Tyler.

Azul

Azul is a multi-use project located along the Old Jacksonville Highway commercial corridor. The building will contain commercial type businesses on the first level. The design will accommodate a restaurant and multiple retail stores. Sidewalks are designed to encourage the idea of a shopping village or main street. Café tables and landscape elements work together to support the enjoyment of an early morning coffee, an afternoon tea or an evening cocktail.

The sidewalk café experience is enhanced in the evening with LED RGB energy efficient lighting. This lighting can paint the building any color to coincide with events. For example, the building can be pink to promote the activities surrounding Komen cancer awareness. Other events to celebrate could include Christmas and New Years.

Other features of the building are the activities associated with roof-top. A neighborhood style restaurant promoting the village atmosphere and casual lounging is in a tower style element for easy identification. The open roof area will be available for events such as social gatherings, weddings, receptions, corporate celebrations and community events.

Liberty

Downtown Tyler’s resurgence of activity has been led by the opening of the Liberty Theater on the square. The Liberty hosts symphony concerts, music events for country, rock, jazz, folk and many other types. Recent activities have included live comedy improv performances. Each fall, the Liberty Theater is the performance venue for downtown Tyler’s Gallery Main Street’s movie shorts. Gallery Main Street’s movie shorts attracted 70 submissions. Eight of these were from out of the United States.

The attention brought to downtown Tyler by the Liberty Theater’s music events, movie shorts, Gallery Main Street’s art walks has been a key in the revitalization of downtown life.

Bellwood

Bellwood is a development adjacent to the City of Tyler’s Lake Bellwood. The lake is outside the west loop adjacent to the Cascades. In addition to receiving surface run-off for the water supply, it has several natural springs adding to the supply. This dual supply maintains water level and keeps the water clear and cool.

Bellwood is a resort planned to have 230 beds and multiple condominium towers. The resort is aiming for 4 Star status. Its offerings include variable sized meetings spaces with break-out rooms, multiple restaurants and bars, spa zone, fitness trainers with the fitness space and non-powered boating options for Lake Bellwood.

The resort/condominium and Lake Bellwood are positioned along a significant bicycle/walking trail system. This allows for multiple modes of transportation connection throughout Tyler.

GOOD DESIGN IS NOT ABOUT FORM FOLLOWING FUNCTION. IT IS FUNCTION WITH CULTURAL CONTENT. BY ADDING “CULTURAL CONTENT” TO THE CONCEPT OF “FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION,” OBJECTS CEASE TO BE FINITE OR PREDICTABLE. MAYBE THE RIGHT WAY TO INTERPRET THE DICTUM IS TO FIRST ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE FUNCTION NEEDS TO BE CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD BEFORE THE FORM IS CONSIDERED.
